Efrain Almeida de Melo

Efrain Almeida de Melo is a Brazilian sculptor born in Boa Viagem, in the state of Ceará, in 1964. He moved to Rio de Janeiro in 1976, where he would later begin his artistic training at the Escola de Artes Visuais do Parque Lage (EAV/Parque Lage).

In the early 1990s, he further developed his artistic education through a course at the Museum of Modern Art of Rio de Janeiro (MAM Rio). During this period, Almeida experimented with a variety of materials before establishing wood as one of the primary mediums of his practice. He became particularly known for small-scale sculptures characterized by meticulous craftsmanship and attention to detail.

His work is deeply connected to memories and cultural references from his childhood in the interior of Ceará. Religious imagery, Northeastern Brazilian popular culture, and the tradition of ex-votos recur throughout his visual vocabulary, often intersecting with themes of memory, the body, spirituality, and personal experience.

Early in his professional career, Almeida also worked as an assistant to artist Hilton Berredo. In 1993, he presented his first solo exhibition, Objetos, at Centro Cultural Sérgio Porto in Rio de Janeiro.

Over the course of his career, Efrain Almeida has participated in significant exhibitions and art events, including the 1st Mercosul Biennial in 1997 and the Buenos Aires International Biennial in 2002, strengthening his presence within the Brazilian contemporary art scene.
