Sylvia Martins, born in 1954 in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, began her art studies at the Museum of Modern Art in Rio de Janeiro between 1973 and 1976. She later furthered her education at the School of Visual Arts and the Art Students League in New York City. In Brazil, she participated in significant events such as the National Salon of Goiás (1977) and the National Salon of Plastic Arts in Rio de Janeiro (1980), in addition to collective exhibitions in both Brazil and the United States, where she is currently based.

Her career includes frequent solo exhibitions in cities like New York, Los Angeles, Rio de Janeiro, and Porto Alegre. Her work, primarily abstract, incorporates a rich mixture of materials and textures, often concealing elements of reality beneath its vibrant plasticity and the use of shiny surfaces.

Although she maintains an apartment in Rio de Janeiro, Sylvia Martins lives and works in New York City.
