Vicente José de Oliveira Muniz, better known as Vik Muniz, was born in São Paulo in 1961. A photographer, draftsman, painter, and printmaker, Muniz studied advertising at the Fundação Armando Álvares Penteado (Faap) before moving to New York in 1983, where he has lived and worked since.

Since 1988, Muniz has been recognized for his series of works that explore themes such as memory, perception, and representation, often using unconventional materials like sugar, liquid chocolate, garbage, dust, and ketchup. His work blends various techniques to recreate iconic images from art history and popular culture.

One of his most famous series, "The Best of Life" (1988), involves reproductions of famous photographs from Life magazine, drawn from memory. These images, later photographed and printed to resemble magazine pages, reflect his interest in the circulation and retention of images.

In subsequent series like "Wire Images," "Earth Images," and "Sugar Children," Muniz uses ephemeral materials to create his works, which are then captured through photography. These photographs, produced in limited editions, serve as the final product of his artistic process. Additionally, Muniz's work extends into other artistic experiences, such as earthwork, where he continues to investigate the relationship between art and its documentation.
