Yolanda Freyre

Yolanda Freyre (Iolanda Soares Freire Hinds) is a Brazilian visual artist from Maranhão, active since 1968. She graduated in Museology from the University of Rio de Janeiro and holds a postgraduate degree in Art Theory from UERJ, having previously studied Social Sciences at UFRJ. Her studies include time at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts and the Saint-Charles Art Center (Sorbonne, Paris). Freyre has participated in international biennials and salons, holding solo exhibitions at renowned institutions such as the Museum of Modern Art of Rio de Janeiro and the National Museum of Fine Arts, as well as shows in European cities like Trento, Genoa, Brescia, Montpellier, and London. Notable group exhibitions include “Terra à Vista - 500 Anos Brasil” (Galerie Debret, Paris) and "Identity" (The Brazilian-American Cultural Institute, Washington, DC, USA).

From 2003 to 2017, Freyre attended seminars and courses on Psychoanalysis and Art, under the guidance of psychoanalyst Maria Teresa Palazzo Nazar from the Lacanian School of Psychoanalysis in Rio de Janeiro.

Freyre’s works can be found in collections at the National Museum of Fine Arts (MNBA) in Rio de Janeiro, the Brazil-United States Institute (IBEU), the SESC/Copacabana Art Gallery, and in private collections. Her work is referenced in the Saur ALLGEMEINES KÜNSTLER-LEXIKON encyclopedia, volume 45, page 8. In 2006, she published the book "O Espelho do Artista" (The Artist’s Mirror) with Companhia de Freud, ISBN 85-7724-012-6.

Her artistic process is structured into five non-linear phases, where references organically intertwine, allowing her works to coexist harmoniously despite being created at different times. The first phase includes paintings of mountains, hydrangeas, and chickens, with ritualistic performances. In the second phase, she investigates color and light quantification. The third phase is marked by color abstraction to enhance materiality. In the fourth, she replaces material density with depth through layered glazes. In her current phase, Freyre expands her practice to include actions, installations, and performances while retaining painting as an expression, now on new surfaces.
