Walmor Corrêa

Walmor Corrêa

Brazil - 1960

Walmor Corrêa has been fascinated with anatomy since school, when he fell in love by dissections and drawings by Leonardo Da Vinci. His teachers all thought Corrêa would be a scientist, but they were not correct.

The artist from the southern Brazilian city of Porto Alegre built a trajectory that defied borders between his two fields of expertise. He did this by fantasizing about new and unlikely biologic species forming in evolution.

In recent years, the artist studied taxidermy with specialists in order to create 35 bizarre creatures composed by the bodies of birds and the heads of rodents. Corrêa has drawn mermaids and dissected folkloric characters, studying their possible physiognomy. He has also created imaginary insects and skeletons, like those seen in Museums of Natural History. His creations come from mixing aspects of mammals, birds, fish and reptiles.

The artist says that it takes some people time to realize that his animals are not normal.
