Shirley Paes Leme Paiva Arantes is a Brazilian sculptor, engraver, illustrator and professor born in Cachoeira Dourada, Goiás in 1955. Leme studied Fine Arts at the Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (UFMG) from 1975 to 1978 alongside artist Amilcar de Castro. In 1979 the artist began teaching the graduate courses in Fine Arts at the Universidade Federal de Uberlândia (UFU), she also took specialization courses at the Institution. The artist's first solo exhibition happened at the Fundação Cultural do Distrito Federal (Brasília, Brazil) in 1981. After receiving a scholarship from the Fullbright Foundation in 1983 the artist moved to the United States to pursue a Master's degree at the University of Arizona in Tucson. She later transferred to Berkeley where she studies for her Doctorate degree at John F. Kennedy University. In 1999 the artist participated in the Kunsthaus Bethanien artist residency in Berlin. She has been a professor in the Visual Arts program at Faculdade Santa Marcelina in São Paulo since 2003.
