Sergio Fingermann

Sergio Fingermann

Brazil - 1953

Brazilian, b. 1953

Fingermann’s artistic training happened in the late 60’s and early 70’s with lessons from important and internationally renowned artists like Ernestina Karman, Yoland Mohalyi, Mark di Suvero and Mario de Luiggi. After a period in Europe, Fingermann returned to Brazil in 1974 and finished his artistic education at Escola de Brasil in São Paulo.

Starting in 1975, Fingermann began working in painting and engraving: seeking to construct a poetic universe, with strong intimist characteristics, be repeating signs, graphic annotations and memories. The pact with subjectivity and singularity remains, however, in the paintings, the pictorial plane receives a treatment, which seeks to reveal construction. The symbolic elements of Fingermann’s work merge on the surface of the painting, the gesture becomes more dramatic and the space, which earlier had been treated as the place of representation, as if it were a stage, materializes like the subject of the painting itself.
