Raul Mourão

Raul Mourão, born in 1967 in Rio de Janeiro, where he currently lives and works, is a visual artist with a well-established career, having participated in several significant group exhibitions over the years. Some of his recent collective shows include: O abrigo e o terreno (Museum of Art of Rio, 2013), Cinéticos e construtivos (Carbono Galeria, São Paulo, 2013), From the margin to the edge (Sommerset House, London, 2012), Studio X (Praça Tiradentes, Rio de Janeiro, 2012), Travessias (Galpão Bela Maré, Rio de Janeiro, 2011), Ponto de equilíbrio (Instituto Tomie Ohtake, São Paulo, 2010), and Arquivo contemporâneo (Museum of Contemporary Art of Niterói, 2009).

Regarding his solo exhibitions, notable ones include: MOTO (Galeria Nara Roesler, São Paulo, 2014), Tração animal (Museum of Modern Art of São Paulo, 2012), Toque devagar (Praça Tiradentes, Rio de Janeiro, 2012), Chão, parede e gente (Lurixs Contemporary Art, Rio de Janeiro, 2011), Mecânico (3 + 1 Contemporary Art, Lisbon, 2007), and Luladepelúcia e outras coisas (Galeria Oeste, São Paulo, 2006).

His work is deeply inspired by the urban landscape of Rio de Janeiro. Mourão combines elements of urban constructions with abstract forms to create kinetic sculptures, drawings, videos, and performances. Starting from meticulous and architectural sketches, he develops minimalist assemblages and sculptures that explore the tension between the city's chaotic nature and its controlled geometry. His visual references include metal fences, security systems, and objects related to urban mobility, such as carts and market stalls. Since 2010, Mourão has been working with kinetic sculptures composed of geometric structures and simplified modular forms. This phase of his work reflects a combination of the implicit violence in his earlier pieces and a formal concern for balance and aesthetics.
