Marilia Furman

Marilia Furman’s work explores the underlying tensions in contemporary society, focusing on the production and consumption of goods. She exposes the abstract structures – often overtly oppressive – that govern social interactions, while investigating the conflicting relationships between various raw materials and symbolic operations. Furman appropriates a wide range of visual signs from the realms of consumerism, nationalism, and conventional artistic practices, creating an approach that reflects the contradictions and ambiguities of the current world.

Nominated for the PIPA Prize in 2023, Marília Furman has participated in several artist residencies, including Pivô - São Paulo (2019), Studio Pharus - São Paulo (2018), and the Independent Program of Escola São Paulo for Artists and Curators (PIESP), where she was awarded the fellowship in 2014. Her solo exhibitions include Vazio e Dilúvio at Central Galeria - São Paulo, PSM Gallery - Berlin (2022, 2019, and 2015), and at Auroras - São Paulo (2019), among others. Her group exhibitions include ContraMemória at Theatro Municipal - São Paulo (2022); No presente, a vida (é) política at Central Galeria - São Paulo (2020); Construção at Mendes Wood DM - São Paulo (2020); Deus está solto! at Galeria Jaqueline Martins - São Paulo (2017); Um Trabalho | Um Texto in São Paulo (2017); Now/Here at Franz Josefs Kai 3 - Vienna (2016); and Rumos Artes Visuais at Itaú Cultural - São Paulo (2012-2013). The artist is also represented by PSM Gallery, Germany.
