Mariana Manhães

Mariana Manhães focuses her works on the exploration of non-anthropomorphic life forms. The organisms she creates emit unintelligible sounds and movements, evoking the limitations of human communication and pointing towards other existences and languages. In recent years, her work has increasingly engaged with issues related to Nature—ranging from its spiritual dimension to the observation of human detachment from it.

Mariana has received notable awards, including the Marcantônio Vilaça / Funarte Prize (2015) and the Gilberto Chateaubriand Prize (2005), and was a finalist for the CNI SESI SENAI Marcantônio Vilaça Prize (2017). Among her solo exhibitions, highlights include Resonances: Omen of the Saliva at Oi Futuro, Rio de Janeiro (2023), and Mountains Watch Us in Time-Lapse at Central Gallery, São Paulo (2019). She has participated in important group exhibitions, such as Cytoplasmic Opera at the Oscar Niemeyer Museum, Curitiba (2022), Bestiary at the São Paulo Cultural Center (2017), the Vancouver Biennale (2014), and Place of Residence at ShanghArt Gallery, Shanghai (2012). Her work has been showcased in significant international institutions such as the Martin-Gropius-Bau Museum in Berlin, the Bozar Museum in Brussels, and the Museum of Modern Art of Rio de Janeiro. Her artworks are part of important public collections, including MAC USP, the Pinacoteca of São Paulo, the Museum of Art of Rio, MAM Bahia, and MAM Rio.
