Luiz Paulo Baravelli

Luiz Paulo Baravelli is one of the leading figures of contemporary Brazilian art, with a multidisciplinary career spanning painting, drawing, sculpture, printmaking, teaching, and writing. He began his artistic training in the early 1960s at Fundação Armando Álvares Penteado (FAAP) in São Paulo, where he studied under Wesley Duke Lee, whose experimental approach had a significant impact on his artistic development.

He later attended the School of Architecture and Urbanism at the University of São Paulo (FAU-USP), further deepening his interest in the relationships between space, form, and visual structure. Throughout his career, he also dedicated himself to teaching, contributing to the education of new generations of artists and designers.

Baravelli was part of a generation committed to redefining art education in Brazil and became one of the founders of Escola Brasil:, an influential experimental art school established in the 1970s alongside Carlos Fajardo, José Resende, and Frederico Nasser.

His early works reflected elements of Pop Art and urban culture. By the late 1960s, he began creating objects and structures using industrial materials. From the 1970s onward, he focused primarily on painting, developing a distinctive visual language characterized by investigations into geometry, pictorial space, and unconventional formats. Urban landscapes, human figures, and complex visual constructions became recurring themes throughout his oeuvre.

Beyond his artistic practice, Baravelli played an active role in Brazil’s cultural discourse as an editor of influential art publications and a contributor to major newspapers. His works are represented in important public and private collections, securing his place among the most significant Brazilian artists of his generation.
