Lourival Cuquinha

Lourival Cuquinha is a Brazilian visual artist, born in Olinda, Pernambuco, in 1975, whose work focuses on political and social issues. He currently divides his time between Recife and São Paulo. Although he studied chemical engineering, philosophy, law, and history, Cuquinha did not complete any of these courses, spending ten years at the Federal University of Pernambuco (1993-2002).

His artistic career began in 1996 or 1997 when he joined the collective Molusco Lama, with which he performed various actions and performances. During this time, he participated in several salons and exhibitions in Pernambuco and worked as a designer, music video director, and set designer for the band Textículos de Mary. In 2002, Cuquinha gained prominence in the "Mostra Rio de Arte Contemporânea," where he was awarded, alongside Daniela Brilhante, for the work "1st World Contest of Mickey Feio."

Between 2002 and 2004, he was part of the collective studio Submarino, participating in various exhibitions and collaborative projects. In 2003, Cuquinha created the piece "Varal," a performance that he continues to develop to this day. "Varal" was awarded at Olinda Arte em Toda Parte in 2003 and at the 7th Salão do Mar in 2006. Cuquinha's work is recognized for its direct and personal approach to political themes, often using his own experiences and impressions as a starting point for his reflections.
