Júlio Villani

Júlio Villani (Marília, SP, 1956) is a painter with a notable international career. In 1974, he moved to São Paulo to attend the Faculdade de Artes Plásticas at FAAP. In 1978, he traveled to London, where he refined his studies at Watford School of Arts until 1980. In 1982, he moved to Paris, where he studied at École Nationale des Beaux-Arts for a year.

Critiques:
"Though he is occasionally interested in painting, it is in drawing that he concretizes the essence of his language. His recent works develop a geometric reduction with a controlled lyricism that places them close to Torres Garcia, though dispensing with the latter's symbols and archetypes. In this geometry, squares and triangles predominate, with immediately suggestive functions. Squares signal space, triangles fill it with time, giving an area its exact duration. From the articulation of both, characters emerge in Júlio's drawings, taking the form of everything as we cast our story-thirsty gaze upon them. Boats, houses, bodies, envelopes, flags, labyrinths, bands seeking infinity – the nascent speech."
