José De Freitas

José de Freitas (1935, Vitória de Santo Antão, PE - 1989, Rio de Janeiro, RJ).

José de Freitas began his artistic journey in 1964 as a self-taught painter after moving to Rio de Janeiro, where he also worked as a theater actor. In 1967, he held his first solo exhibition at Galeria Goeldi. The following year, he participated in the 1st Summer Salon at the Museum of Modern Art in Rio de Janeiro (MAM-RJ) and had another solo show at Piccola Galeria.

His work gained international recognition in 1970 when it was featured in an exhibition of Brazilian naïve artists in London. In 1971, he held solo exhibitions at Galeria Celina in Juiz de Fora, MG, and at Elvaston Gallery in London.
