João Carlos Da Silva

João Das Alagoas

Brazil - 1958

João Carlos da Silva, or João de Alagoas, was born in the Brazilian state of Alagoas, in the rural zone of Capela. He is a master in ceramics and is responsible for recreating the “bumba-meu-boi” bull figure, a common image in Brazilian figurative popular art. With his own hands, João creates heavily detailed, large- scale animal figures, representing folkloric stories of the Northeast of Brazil, its people and its tradition.

João is self-taught and is used to doing things himself. From a young age he stood out at school for his drawings. He used clay as a toy to create little bull figures. João de Alagoas says he learned his craft with time, experience and observation, just like his main reference, Vitalino.
