Ivald Granato

Ivald Granato Filho, born in Campos dos Goytacazes, Rio de Janeiro, in 1949, and deceased in São Paulo in 2016, was an influential Brazilian painter, engraver, draftsman, and multimedia artist. He began his artistic training with Robert Newman in 1966 and studied briefly at the School of Fine Arts. Known for his dynamism and versatility, Granato explored a wide range of media, including performances and interventions documented through photography and video.

Starting in the 1970s, Granato made his mark on the art scene with energetic performances and innovative exhibitions, receiving awards such as the best draftsman of the year from the São Paulo Association of Art Critics (APCA) in 1979 and 1982. During the 1980s, he collaborated with the Performative Band, an initiative that combined painting, music, theater, and circus, under the leadership of artist José Roberto Aguilar.

Granato's work is deeply marked by autobiographical references, with constant experimentation of styles and techniques ranging from expressionism to Fauvism, always with an ironic and critical approach. He was not limited to a specific style or medium, always seeking to expand the possibilities of art.

Recognized as a tireless avant-gardist, Granato integrated art and life inseparably, continually pushing the boundaries between creating art and living artistically. His contribution to Brazilian art is celebrated for his intense graphic explorations, bold use of colors, and layers of paint that, in some cases, create non-figurative palimpsests.

Granato's works have been exhibited in major museums and galleries in Brazil and internationally, becoming part of prominent collections such as the Rio de Janeiro Art Museum, the Rio de Janeiro Museum of Fine Arts, the São Paulo Art Museum, the São Paulo State Pinacoteca, and the São Paulo Museum of Contemporary Art, among others.
