Gretta Sarfaty

Gretta Alegre Sarfaty (Athens, Greece, 1947) is a multifaceted artist working in painting, drawing, printmaking, photography, and multimedia art. Naturalized as Brazilian in 1954, Gretta moved to São Paulo with her family and gained international recognition in the late 1970s, particularly for her contributions to Body Art and the feminist movement. In the 1970s, she joined the Vanguard Group in Rio de Janeiro, alongside artists such as Cildo Meireles, Artur Barrio, and Rubens Gerchman. She also studied at the Panamerican School of Art in São Paulo and was a student of Ivald Granato and Walter Lewy.

Gretta’s work is characterized by her 1970s series such as “Body Works,” “Transformations,” “Evocative Recollections,” and “Metamorphic Recollections,” which explore the representation of the body as a space of transformation. These series reflect on the female experience in art, questioning the complexity of identity and the impact of social norms on the female body. In "Body Works," the artist combines painting and photography to explore her own body, often captured in uncomfortable and unconventional poses, challenging traditional perceptions of femininity.

In the series “Evocative Recollections” and “Metamorphic Recollections,” Gretta expands this research, presenting her body in various contexts and in interaction with elements such as fabric and photographic negatives, reflecting on the fusion of body and object. In “Transformations,” she examines the distortion of her own image, confronting beauty and femininity stereotypes while addressing the struggle for women's bodily autonomy and dismantling historical female subordination.

The artist began her printmaking journey in metal etching in 1973, under the guidance of Mário Gruber, and also explored video and performance, participating in exhibitions in countries like Italy, France, Belgium, and Germany. In 1984, she moved to New York. Throughout her career, Gretta has exhibited her works in prestigious museums and institutions around the world, including the Museum of Contemporary Art at the University of São Paulo (MAC/USP), Museum of Modern Art in São Paulo (MAM-SP), São Paulo Museum of Art (MASP), National Museum of Fine Arts (MNBA), Centre Georges Pompidou, and the Museum of Modern Art in New York (MoMA), among others.
