José Fernandes de Lemos is a Portuguese Graphic Designer, Photographer, Illustrator, muralist and poet born in Lisbon, Portugal in 1926. Lemos began his photography career in the early 1950’s, after studying at Escola de Artes Decorativas António Arroio and the Sociedade Nacional de Belas Artes, both in Lisbon. Lemos captured images of intellectuals and artists from the surrealist movements, he also transformed day-to-day images with lighting effects. He also acts as an illustrator and collaborates with writing poetry for Uni/Pentacórnio magazine.

In 1953 he travels to Brazil and settles in São Paulo. He begins working with drawing and painting, presenting a non-figurative production. In Brazil, Lemos also teaches at the Faculdade de Arquitetura e Urbanismo da Universidade de São Paulo - FAU/USP. From 1968 to 1970 he acts as president for the Associação Brasileira de Desenho Industrial – ABDI, which he also helped in founding.
