Darcilio Lima

Darcílio Paula Lima, born in Cascavel, Ceará, in 1944, is a Brazilian draughtsman and painter. In his youth, he moved to Rio de Janeiro, where he began to draw regional scenes, focusing on rafts and beaches of the Northeast. He followed this with a phase dedicated to female nudes before joining the Surrealism movement. He exhibited his works at the "L'Atelier" Gallery in Rio de Janeiro in 1968. Darcílio also participated in the Surrealist Art Festival in London alongside Salvador Dali; the IV Exhibition of Young Contemporary Art at the Museum of Contemporary Art at the University of São Paulo, where he received an acquisition award in 1970; and the XX National Salon of Modern Art, in Rio de Janeiro, in 1971. Mário Pedrosa, introducing one of his solo exhibitions at the "L'Atelier" Gallery, considered him one of Brazil's authentic surrealists. Antônio Bento commented on his art: "Darcílio Lima's art mixes the fantastic with the real, which has been perfectly legitimate since the painting of Bosch, one of the historical precursors of surrealism." According to Bento, Darcílio confessed that the erotic impulse is the source of all strength in life and art, which explains the motivation of his drawing, centered on a deeply sexual theme.
