A Central Figure in Pop Art

Andy Warhol (1928-1987), born Andrew Warhola, was an influential American painter and filmmaker, widely recognized as a pivotal figure in the Pop Art movement. He is best known for his iconic Campbell's Soup Cans paintings and vibrant series of Marilyn Monroe portraits.

Born on August 6, 1928, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Warhol was the son of Czech immigrants who moved to the United States during World War I. From a young age, he demonstrated a strong interest in visual arts and regularly attended the cinema, in addition to participating in art classes during high school at the Carnegie Museum.

Warhol graduated in 1949 from the Carnegie Institute of Technology, where he studied art with the aim of becoming a commercial illustrator. After graduating, he moved to New York City, where he began his career as an illustrator for major magazines, in addition to creating advertisements and window displays for stores. His unique style quickly made him one of the most successful illustrators of the 1950s, earning various awards.

In 1956, his work was exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art in New York (MOMA). In 1961, Warhol began to explore pop art, using comic strip images and Coca-Cola bottles as the basis for his paintings. His famous "Campbell’s Soup Cans" series was launched in 1962, establishing his fame in the contemporary art world.
