Tomie Ohtake (Kyoto, Japan, 1913 - São Paulo, Brazil, 2015) was one of Brazil's most prominent visual artists. Born in Japan, she moved to Brazil in 1936 and began her artistic career at the age of 37. A member of the Seibi group, which brought together Japanese-Brazilian artists, Tomie held her first solo exhibition in 1957 at the Museum of Modern Art of São Paulo (MAM-SP), invited by critic Mário Pedrosa.

Known for her abstract paintings, Tomie also explored various techniques and mediums throughout her career. In the 1970s, she began experimenting with different printing methods and, from the late 1980s onwards, she focused on creating large-scale sculptures and public works that are now integral to the landscape of São Paulo and other Brazilian cities.

Tomie Ohtake participated in several editions of the São Paulo Biennial, as well as international biennials such as the Venice Biennale (1972) and the Havana Biennial (1984 and 1986). Her solo exhibitions took place in prestigious institutions worldwide, including the Hara Museum of Contemporary Art and the Mori Art Museum in Tokyo, the Barbican Centre in London, the Bass Museum of Art in Miami, and Brazil's major museums such as MASP and MAM-RJ.

Her work is part of important collections, including those of MASP, MAM-SP, MAM-RJ, MAC-USP, MAC-Niterói, and the Pinacoteca do Estado de São Paulo, as well as international collections like the Patricia Phelps de Cisneros Collection. Tomie Ohtake is remembered as one of the great figures of contemporary Brazilian art, whose work transcended borders and left an immeasurable legacy for the country's culture.
