Martin Brausewetter

Martin Brausewetter

Australia - 1960

Martin Brausewetter (Vienna, Austria/1960) graduated from the Hochschule für Angewandte Kunst in 1987. Since 2009, lives and works between Vienna and São Paulo.

Martin’s work deals with the constant construction and deconstruction of space — in the broadest sense of the term. Painting mainly with egg tempera, produced by himself, he superimposes numberless layers of paint in order to carefully remove them later. This process — made with a razor blade — is partial and controlled, allowing different layers of colour to reappear. Martin defines his poetics as a “deconstructed baroque”. He also works with drawings, photography, collage and objects. The latter arise from the shock between his foreign gaze and the ephemeral resistance architecture from Brazilian favelas. Suppressing the colours but keeping the building forms, the objects are an attempt to organise what the eye observes, in search of an order beyond what is real.

Amongst his individual exhibitions the highlights are those at Galeria Ferran Cano (Palma de Mallorca, Spain/1989), Galerie Ariadne (Vienna, Austria/1996), Project Space Brooklyn (New York, USA/1997), Galerie Hohenlonhe-Kalb (Vienna, Austria/1999), Kunstforum Unterland (Neumarkt, Italy/2000), Haus der Kultur; Thomastik-Infeld Collection (Halbturn, Austria/2008), Galeria Vertente (Campinas, Brazil/2011), Espaço Contraponto 55 (São Paulo, Brazil/2013) and Galerie Feichtner (Vienna, Austria/2014). His works figure in many public collections, such as Sammlung Vienna Insurance Group (Vienna, Austria), EWI Collection (Frankfurt, DE), VAMED Collection (Vienna, Austria), Artothek (Public Collection of the Ministry of Culture from Austria/Vienna, Austria) and MA7 (Public Collection from the City of Vienna, Austria). By the end of 2015, Brausewetter had his first individual show at Galeria Mezanino: Descontruções em Tempos Líquidos (Deconstructions in Liquid Times).
