Marcia Xavier

Marcia Xavier

Brazil - 1967

Márcia Xavier is a Brazilian artist born in Belo Horizonte in 1967. She currently lives and works in São Paulo, Brazil. The artist's process begins with photography, which in her work pose an investigation about landscape, the horizon and architecture. She adds light boxes to these images creating a formal effect on the themes she explores.

Xavier participated in the 3rd Mercosul Bienal and the 6th Bienal in Havana, Cuba. Her work is a part of important public collections such as the Société Général d’Art Contemporain in France; Museu de Arte Moderna (MAM) and Banco Itaú in São Paulo, Brazil; Museu de Arte Contemporânea in Ribeirão Preto, Brazil and the Museu de Arte Moderna (MAM) – Coleção Gilberto Chateaubriand, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

During the 1990’s, the beginning of her career, Marcia Xavier investigated photography through self-portraits. During the 2000’s her work expanded into questions of distortion in photography, as seen in her work Carambola, where snooker balls are reflected and distorted in the walls of an aluminium container. Works of Xavier such as Quadra and Curva Francesa reflect upon the artist's interest for schools and urban organization. Her more recent work such as Olho D’Agua explores spatial distortion in images reflected in water.
