Luiz Áquila

Luiz Aquila da Rocha Miranda is an artist born in Rio de Janeiro in 1943. He began studying woodcarving with Oswaldo Goeldi in 1959. In 1962 Aquila moved to Brasília and studied at the Instituto de Arte e Arquitetura da Universidade de Brasília.

In 1965 the artist received a scholarship from the French Government and went to study at the Cité International des Arts in Paris. During his time abroad, Aquila also travels to Lisbon and works at the Sociedade de Gravadores Portugueses.
He remains in Europe until 1968 and then returns to Brazil and becomes an art professor at the University of Brasília, where he remains until 1972. After his time teaching, the artist travels to London and studies engraving at the Slade School of Fine Arts.

In 1978 he coordinates the Centro de Criatividade de Brasília, a project by the United Nations towards Education, Science and Culture (UNESCO). Aquila also exhibits at the 27th Biennale in Venice.
From 1979 to 1986, the artist taught painting at the Escola de Artes Visuais do Parque Lage – EAV in Rio de Janeiro; during this period Aquila is said to be of great importance in helping form young artists. In 1988, he becomes director of the same institution he taught at.

Aquila participated in the 17th, 18th and 20th International Bienal in São Paulo (1983, 1985, 1989). In 1992 and 1994 the Museu de Arte Moderna do Rio de Janeiro and the Museu de Arte de São Paulo Assis Chateaubriand – MASP completed retrospective exhibitions showing the artist's work.
