Hércules Barsotti

Hécules Rubens Barsotti began his artistic career in 1926, mentored by painter Enrico Vio, with whom he studied drawing and composition.

In 1937, Barsotti receives a degree in Chemical Engineering from Instituto Mackenzie. He begins painting in 1940, and, in the next decade, shows his first professional set of work. In 1954, Barsotti founded the Estudío de Projetos Gráficos alongside Willys de Castro; together they create illustrations for magazines and develop prints for fabrics which he later produced. In 1958, the artist travels to Europe to further his education and meets Max Bill, one of the top technicians in concrete art.

In the 1960’s Barsotti is invited by Ferreira Gullar to join the Grupo Neoconcreto in Rio de Janeiro; with the group he participates in a series of exhibitions at the Ministério da Educação e Cultura (MEC), in Rio de Janeiro as well as in the Museu de Arte Moderna (MAM) in São Paulo. In 1960 he also shows his work at the Konkrete Kunst exhibit organized by Max Bill, in Zurich.

Hércules Barsotti explores color and dynamic forms creating unusually shaped works (hexagons, pentagons and diamond shapes, for example). His color work and shapes award a unique three dimensionality to his work.
