Décio Vieira

Brazil - 1922 - 1988

Décio Luiz Monteiro Vieira (Petrópolis, RJ, 1922 - Rio de Janeiro, RJ, 1988) was a Brazilian painter and draftsman. He began his studies in drawing and painting with Axl Leskoschek at the Getúlio Vargas Foundation (FGV) in Rio de Janeiro in 1948. From this time, he started taking classes with the engraver Fayga Ostrower and the painter Ivan Serpa at the Museum of Modern Art of Rio de Janeiro (MAM/RJ). In the 1950s, he was part of the Grupo Frente, alongside Lygia Pape, Lygia Clark, Hélio Oiticica, among others, and later of the Neo-Concrete Group. Between 1954 and 1962, he worked with Fayga Ostrower producing fabric prints. In 1966, he collaborated with Alfredo Volpi on a fresco in Brasília, and from him, he learned the tempera technique, adopting an abstract approach to his art. In the 1970s, he returned to figuration, focusing on landscapes and teaching at MAM/RJ. He founded an art school for children in the Rocinha favela community in Rio de Janeiro. A retrospective exhibition of his work was held in 1992 at the Rodrigo de Mello Franco Gallery of Funarte in Rio de Janeiro.
