Bill Brandt

Bill Brandt

Born in Germany and based in the United Kingdom, Bill Brandt is recognized as a pioneer of modernist photography. During the 1930s in London, Brandt solidified his unique approach, influenced by his experience in Man Ray's Paris studio. His photographs are essential for the study of English society, landscape, and literature, and are considered fundamental in the history of photography.

During World War II, Brandt captured iconic images of London during the blackout and the Blitz shelters, which are often highlighted as symbols of British resilience. These photographs are presented in the context of his work for illustrated magazines of the time, creating an important link between his contributions before and after the conflict.

Between 1945 and 1961, Brandt focused on a series of artistic nudes that reflect both the personal and the universal, marked by sensuality and strangeness. His prints vary in style throughout his career, and this exhibition aims to highlight the aesthetic quality of his best works as well as map his artistic evolution.

Brandt is celebrated for his ability to transform the everyday into extraordinary visions, and his works are present in major collections and museums around the world, including the Museum of Modern Art and Tate Modern.
