Beatriz Milhazes

Brazil - 1960

Brazilian, b. 1961, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Beatriz Milhazes is a Brazilian artist known for her colorful abstract paintings and prints. Swirling with geometric and arabesque shapes, Milhazes’s works are kaleidoscopic, inspired by both indigenous Brazilian and Modernist European design elements. Works such as her Carambola (2008), show the influence of Henri Matisse, Sonia Delaunay, and Wassily Kandinsky. “I need to have all these elements and put them together, [they] are not peaceful surfaces,” she said of her work.“There should be some struggle on the surface, [to] create some activities for your eyes.” Born in 1960 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Milhazes initially pursued journalism before changing her focus to study fine art at the Escola de Artes Visuais do Parque Lage. The artist continues to live and work in Rio de Janiero, Brazil and her works are in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Reina Sofia National Museum in Madrid, and the Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh, among others.
