Augusto De Campos

Brazil - 1931

Augusto Luís Browne de Campos, born in São Paulo in 1931, is a distinguished poet, translator, literary and musical critic, and essayist. He graduated in law from the Faculty of Law at Largo de São Francisco and began his literary journey by publishing poems in the Revista Brasileira de Poesia in 1949. In 1951, he released his debut book, "O Rei Menos o Reino". The following year, he broke away from the Poetry Club and co-founded the Noigandres group, which initiated the concrete poetry movement alongside Haroldo de Campos and Décio Pignatari.

Campos played a crucial role in spreading concrete poetry, participating in the 1st National Exhibition of Concrete Art in 1956 at MAM/SP. Internationally, he represented Brazil in exhibitions in Stuttgart and Tokyo, solidifying his status as a key figure in avant-garde poetry.

During the 1960s, Campos also served as an editor for the literary magazine Invenção, collaborating with notable names in Brazilian literature. In 1974, he co-created the "Caixa Preta," a collection of visual poems and manipulable objects, in collaboration with artist Júlio Plaza.

As a translator, Campos introduced Brazilian audiences to the works of Ezra Pound, James Joyce, E.E. Cummings, among others. His interest in avant-garde music also reflected in publications about contemporary composers and his analysis of bossa nova and tropicalia in Brazilian popular music.

Augusto de Campos continues to be an influential figure in Brazilian literature and culture, with works that cross generations and borders.
