Antonio Gomide

Brazil - 1895 - 1967

Antonio Gonçalves Gomide was a Brazilian painter, sculptor, decorator and set designer. Born in Itapetininga, Brazil in 1895, Gomide moved to Switzerland with his family in 1913 and studied art in Geneva for five years, studying with Gillard and Ferdinand Hodler. In the twenties, Gomide moved to Toulouse, France, where he began working with Marcel Lenoir, where he learned the fresco technique. Later in the decade, he moved to Paris and opened his own atelier. Gomide also came into contact with important european new wave artists.

Gomide returned to Brazil in 1929; in the thirties and forties he produced Frescos, cards for stained glass, as well as his paintings. His work uses abstract forms and indigenous motifs along with landscapes. Gomide is considered one of the artists responsible for Brazilian art deco style.
