Annette Skarbek

Artistic and Academic Journey

Annette Skarbek (born in 1963, Brazil) has a distinguished career in both academia and the visual arts. She graduated in Law from the Federal University of Paraná in 1986 and took a diverse path by obtaining a Master’s in Studio Art from New York University in 2013.

She furthered her artistic education through significant residencies and courses, including a residency at the School of Visual Arts in New York in 2014 and a summer course in Drawing and Painting at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris, France, in 1996. Skarbek also studied metal engraving and lithography at the free workshop of Solar do Barão in Curitiba under the guidance of Uiara Bartira in 1983, and drawing and painting with Jair Mendes between 1981 and 1982 at the Guido Viaro Museum in Curitiba.

Her main solo exhibitions include the "Open Windows Project" at Atelier Luis Lopes in Curitiba in 2011; the Museum of Contemporary Art of Paraná in 2008; the Alfredo Andersen Museum in Curitiba in 2001; and the University Museum of the Pontifical Catholic University of Curitiba in 1994. She also held an exhibition at the Banestado Art Gallery in Curitiba in 1987.

Skarbek has been recognized with several awards, notably a Special Jury Mention at the 10th Brazilian Drawing Show in 1994, the Overseas Travel Award at the 46th Paraná Salon in 1989, and the First Prize at the 41st Paraná Salon in 1984.

Among her group exhibition participations are "Total Exhibition" in the gallery circuit of the International Biennial of Curitiba in 2015; "Open" at the Oscar Niemeyer Museum in Curitiba between 2014 and 2015; the NYU MA Thesis Exhibition at La Mama Gallery in New York in 2013; and the Berliner Liste Contemporary Art Fair in Berlin in 2012.

Annette Skarbek has made significant contributions to both the Brazilian and international art scenes with her works that explore contemporary themes through a variety of mediums and techniques.
