Amalia Giacomini

Brazil - 1974

Explorer of Space and Perception

Born in São Paulo in 1974, Amalia Giacomini is a visual artist with a degree in Architecture and Urbanism from FAU-USP and a master's degree from UFRJ, currently living and working in Rio de Janeiro. Her artistic journey began in 2002 at the School of Visual Arts of Parque Lage, and since then, she has dedicated herself to investigating the representation of space in her works, often inspired by architecture and the exhibition space itself.

Her individual exhibition "Bias," held at the Paço Imperial in 2016, exemplifies her innovative approach by altering the viewer's spatial perception through the use of lines, chains, and anti-flame screens. According to curator Felipe Scovino, Giacomini engages in dialogue with minimalism and post-minimalism, evoking tactile three-dimensionality where the surroundings become an integral part of the work, challenging conventional notions of architecture and landscape.

In addition to installations, the artist creates wall objects such as the "Studies from the Memory of the House series," where she explores virtual volumes through the cutting and layering of anti-flame screens, inviting the viewer to a visual experience where body, movement, physics, and light are key elements.

Giacomini has exhibited her work at renowned Brazilian institutions such as the Tomie Ohtake Institute, Itaú Cultural, Brazilian House Museum, São Paulo Cultural Center, among others, as well as international exhibitions like "Liberér l'horizon reinventér l'espace" at the Cité des Arts gallery in Paris, and "The Invisible Apparent" at the National Gallery of Prague.

With work that navigates between the tangible and the virtual, Amalia Giacomini establishes herself as a relevant voice in Brazilian contemporary art, constantly challenging our perceptions and inviting reflection on space and its representation.
