Innovation in Brazilian Contemporary Art

Alvaro Seixas, born in Rio de Janeiro in 1982, is a renowned artist who lives and works in the same city. His work stands out for exploring the concepts of "painting", "abstraction", and "appropriation", and how these elements relate to the contemporary artistic-cultural context. Recently, Seixas has enriched his drawings and paintings with words and texts, delving into narrative, theory, and critique without losing sight of the aesthetic and sensitive value of these elements.

Holding a Ph.D. in Visual Languages from UFRJ, Seixas also serves as a professor in the Drawing department of the School of Fine Arts at the same university. His career began to gain prominence in 2005 with an individual exhibition at the SESC Niterói Art Gallery, and since then, his artistic trajectory has been marked by significant awards and exhibitions.

Among his achievements is the SIM Visual Arts Prize in 2008, in Belém do Pará, and the Projéteis Funarte Contemporary Art Prize in Rio de Janeiro in 2012, along with artists Rafael Alonso and Hugo Houayek, leading to the collective exhibition "Palácio".

His recent exhibitions include the collective "Ornaments" at Galeria A Gentil Carioca, Rio de Janeiro, in 2013; the individual "Paintbrush" at Mercedes Viegas Contemporary Art Gallery, Rio de Janeiro, in 2015; and the collective "Small Paintings" at Auroras space, São Paulo, in 2016.

In 2015, Alvaro Seixas was the youngest artist selected to compete for the CNI-SESI Marcantonio Vilaça Prize for Fine Arts and participated in the X Mercosul Biennial in Porto Alegre. Author of the books "About the Vague: Indefinitions in Contemporary Artistic Production" (2011) and "Palace" (2013), Seixas has works in various private and institutional collections, including the Diógenes Paixão Collection and the Rio Art Museum (MAR).
