Alfredo Prior

Vanguard and Multidisciplinarity in Argentine Art

Alfredo Prior, born in Buenos Aires in 1952, has established himself as a multifaceted figure in the art world, excelling as a painter, writer, performer, and musician. His foray into art began with an individual exhibition at the Lirolay Gallery in 1970, and his academic education was enriched when he entered the Literature program at the University of Buenos Aires the following year.

During the 1980s, Prior was an active voice in the artistic scene, participating in numerous collective projects and being part of the La anavanguardia exhibition. His talent was internationally recognized in 1985 when he represented Argentina at the XVIII São Paulo Art Biennial.

Prior has held numerous individual exhibitions that reflect his artistic evolution and the diversity of his work. Among these, "El pequeño pabellón entre las plantas de melón" (ICI, 1999) and "La felicidad en un minuto" (MBA-MAC Bahía Blanca, 2014) stand out. His work has been the subject of multiple retrospectives, such as "Antológica" at the National Museum of Fine Arts in Neuquén and the Franklin Rawson Museum in San Juan in 2016.

Besides his plastic work, Prior has explored the world of performance, with memorable presentations such as "Rrose Sélavy desnudada por el Capitán Nemo" (1997) and "Jackson Pollock en el Amazonas" (2004), dialoguing with 20th-century iconic figures like Marcel Duchamp and Jackson Pollock.

His contribution to literature includes the publication of "Cómo resucitar a una liebre muerta" (2006), a collection of fictional texts, and "El triunfo de Adriano" (2012), delving into his versatility as a creator. In 2007, the publication "Alfredo Prior" by Vasari Editions highlighted his trajectory with texts by Rafael Cippolini.

Recognized with awards such as the one from the Argentine Association of Art Critics in 1987 and the First Prize at the IX National Painting Prize of the Central Bank in 2016, Alfredo Prior has left an indelible mark on Argentine art. His works are part of prestigious collections both in Argentina and abroad, including the National Museum of Fine Arts and the Modern Art Museum of Buenos Aires.

Living and working in Buenos Aires, Alfredo Prior continues to explore and expand the boundaries of his artistic expression, solidifying himself as a pillar of the avant-garde in Argentine art.
