Aguilar

Brazil - 1941

Brazilian, b. 1941

José Roberto Aguilar, born in São Paulo, Brazil in 1941 was a self-taught painter, filmmaker, performer, sculptor, writer, musician and curator. Considered a pioneer in the new wave of modern art in Brazil, Aguilar painted with spraypaint and compressed air guns – debuting his work at the Opinião 65 show at the Museum of Modern Art in Rio De Janeiro (MAM/RJ).

From 1969 to 1975 Aguilar lived in London and New York, where he began experimenting with video art. Back in Brazil in 1976, Aguilar presented an installation at the 14th International Bienal in São Paulo – composed of 12 T.V. monitors on a stage, creating a cosmic circus.

During the 1990s, an already established Aguilar focused on painting on huge canvases, as well as glass and ceramic sculptures. In 2003, Aguilar was named as a representative of the Ministry of Culture in São Paulo.
